Current work:

  • Please review, and encourage your colleagues to review the Blood Transfusion Policy.
  • RN’s scope of practice prevents RN’s from ordering: medications, blood tests, point of care testing, and EKG’s as well as urinary catheter placement and/or irrigations, starting IV’s and inserting rectal tubes.
  • The Staff Perception Survey will occur April 2-22, 2012. Please complete and encourage your colleagues to complete the survey.

2011 Goals

  • Participate in planning for and communication of key initiatives for promoting and sustaining regulatory readiness and Magnet designation readiness (EED).
  • Serve as a liaison between unit-based colleagues and senior nursing leadership regarding day-to-day clinical, quality of work-life, and work-life balance issues.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency in patient care delivery and additional cost savings.

STAFF NURSE ADVISORY COMMITTEE OVERVIEW

The Patient Care Services Staff Nurse Advisory Committee provides a forum for communication between nursing leadership and clinical nurses at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Committee members representing all patient care units engage in dialogue with nursing leaders about matters of patient care and professional development. return to top

Responsibilities:

  • Provide dialogue between the Chief Nurse and clinical nurses.
  • Dialogue includes matters affecting patient care delivery and clinical and professional development in the Department of Nursing.
  • Opportunity is provided for two-way communication. return to top

Membership:

  • Registered nurses from PCS are eligible to apply annually and/or as positions become available.
  • Generally, only one nurse per patient care unit may serve at a time.
  • Nursing Directors are responsible for ensuring that their units are represented and are responsible for making the final recommendation to the Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse. return to top

2010 Accomplishments

Operate as a clearinghouse committee to determine best group(s) and/or individual(s) to address identified issues.
Identified the following issues to be addressed.

  • Cell phone coverage in the Yawkey garage.
  • Communication with patients and families in response to H1N1 visitation restrictions.
  • Patient parking concerns.
  • Opportunities to increase staffs skill in inserting IV's and blood drawing.
  • EMAPPS roll out.
  • Policies which were deemed to not be user friendly.
  • Staffs safety concerns.

Protect the nurse/clinician relationship with patients and families through promotion of customer service, patient and family centered care, and safety initiatives.

  • Provide feedback to Quality and Safety on such initiatives as Universal Protocol.
  • Participated on a demonstration and gave feedback on issues concerning accessing TROVE.
  • Identified concern with adequate shelter, in inclement weather, for patients being dropped off or picked up at the hospital.
  • Identified opportunities in process and communication between units to ensure the timely transfer of patients to the general care units.
  • Provided feedback to nutritional services on patients response to new menu and identified opportunities to improve satisfaction.
  • Identified opportunities for nurses to impact and improve HCAPS scores.

Identify and provide input into prioritization of educational offerings.

  • Provided feedback on the HealthStream documentation module.
  • Provided feedback and guidance to the Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical and Professional Development leadership on the creation of programs, competency training and e-learning.
  • Provided feedback on the new Nursing orientation program.

Serve as liaison between unit-based colleagues and senior nursing leadership regarding day-to-day clinical, quality of work-life balance issues.

  • Communicated staffs questions on a variety of concerns including JCAHO, holiday scheduling and commuter issues.
  • Provided colleagues input in response to the Staff Perception Survey results.

Address concerns regarding use of cell phones; including camera function on units.

Continue to provide System Improvement with feedback regarding noise control initiative.
Identified and promoted ways which nurses can promote a quiet, restful environment for patients.

Continue to provide System Improvement with feedback regarding non-salary TIGER Team initiatives and other ideas for cost containment and efficiency.

Seek clarification as it relates to questions or concerns that the healthcare team raises.

Shape nursing's image and advertising campaign by providing input into the key processes of design, selection and evaluation.

Participate in planning for and communication of key information for promoting and sustaining Joint Commission and Magnet designation readiness (EED).

  • Served as liaison to colleagues on preparing for and participating in JCAHO visit.
  • Identified and worked to identify solutions to issues raised pre and post JCAHO visit. return to top
