Current work:

  • A new procedure for obtaining ECG’s was presented. The procedure outlines a process to address the large number of ECG’s that are discarded because they lack patient identification. The procedure also includes the new placement of V5-V

  • A new advanced search tool called Queriable Patient Inference Dossieier (QPID) is available for nurses at MGH.  QPID is a search engine that services as an adjunct to the hospital EMR.  It serves as a method that allows clinicians to retrieve data from certain repositories within the hospital.
  • A new policy has been developed regarding patients receiving drug desensitization or test doses of medications.  The policy will provide guidelines for patients who will be receiving medications that they have allergies to or a history of reactions but these medications are deemed necessary for their medical treatment.
  • The Code Cart/Emergency Equipment sheet has been revised to include the checking of the AED.  New sheets will be appearing on the units during May/June 2012.  These are the minimum checks that need to be done on equipment but individual units may have additional checks on their particular units.

2012 Goals

  • Continue to review policies and procedures that impact nursing practice, implementing changes to reflect current evidence based practice.
  • To ensure that patients are cared for safely through the review of nursing policies and procedures.
  • To continue to review products that will provide excellent nursing care and  be cost saving measures.
  • To continue to work with the ACD Committee as they embark upon the implementation of their online documentation project.
  • To continue to assist with the readiness of the institution for the Joint Commission in ensuring that nursing procedures and policies are current.

2011 Goals

  • Continue to thoroughly review all policies and procedures and ensure consistency with evidence-based practice.
  • Continue to review all products for patient safety, efficacy and cost.
  • Continue to communicate and educate clinicians on new or updated nursing practice standards and products.

Champions review and approve products that are brought into the practice environment, including the plan for product roll-out. Champions should have an interest in influencing how the policies and procedures that guide practice are reviewed and implemented. They should also have an interest in being involved in the decisions to purchase and trial products in the clinical area. return to top
