Current work:
- Champions discussed developing of guidelines to assist new nurses on assessing when a patient can safely have their restraints removed.
- Champions reviewed and were encouraged to share that it is the intent, not number of side rails that determines whether side rails are a restraint. If the intent is to restrict a patient from getting out of bed then side rails are a restraint. If the intent is to prevent a patient from sliding out of bed, then side rails are not a restraint.
- The new restraint brochure for patients and families is available. The brochure will be part of the Knight Center, May "Happenings" series and will be distributed to high volume restraint units.
2012 Goals
- Pilot project to explore the RN/MD decision making process for implementing and discontinuing restraints.
- Pilot project to assess the potential for sensory evaluation and interventions in the acute non-psychiatric inpatient units to prevent or decrease time in restraints.
- Collaboration with the Restraint Solutions Team regarding improvements in the education of nurses about current CMS/DMH regulatory issues, MGH policies and procedures.

RESTRAINT USAGE STEERING COMMITTEE OVERVIEW |
The Restraint Usage subcommittee will be engaged in identifying evidence-based interventions that can reduce the use of restraints. Champions will gain knowledge in identifying and intervening effectively to minimize a patient’s likelihood of being restrained. Champions should have an interest in minimizing the use of restraints through early identification of patients at risk, collaboration with the patient’s family, and the use of alternative therapies and interventions. return to top
