Current Work:

  1. In lieu of the July meeting a Muslim Ethics presentation was held on Tuesday, July 18th in the O’Keefe auditorium.
  2. The committee discussed the changes to the Vietnamese flag.  The previous flag before the change in government, is more respectful to our Boston Vietnamese community. Discussion will continue at a future meeting.
  3. The committee had an Educational presentation on August 15th.  Shristi Sapkota walked the champions through the culture and rituals of Nepalese.  She explained the belief system and how it has changed over the years.
  4. The champions reflected and debriefed on the events of Charlottesville, VA.  There was a discussion around the violence and hate crimes.

Accomplishments 2016

  1. Various members of the committee or guests presented monthly educational/cultural presentations to better inform champions about certain cultures/minority groups. Champions took this information back to their respective units/disciplines. Examples include: Puerto Rico, Judaism, LGBT healthcare, and South Africa.
  2. The committee leadership presented at various hospital wide events to members of hospital leadership to increase membership and recognition throughout the hospital
  3. The committee began discussions and workshops on both unconscious biases and structural racism with the guidance of experts such as Deb Washington, RN MSN.
  4. Goals 2017
  5. Continue our monthly cultural presentations to enhance our knowledge and understanding of culturally competent care.
  6. Develop a presentation that can be brought to various care units, MGH Leadership, and used in a VidScrip for the Knight Nursing Center’s new nursing grand round format.
  7. Have 100% membership attendance at the SAFER Fair.
  8. Upload all educational presentations to the Excellence Every Day Portal.
  9. Update the committee website to better reflect the work we do.
