About the Institute for Patient Care

Registered Nurse (RN)

In the Department of Nursing,

  • We believe that the essence of nursing practice is caring. Caring which is a science and an art deliverable, teachable, researchable, accomplished with wisdom, knowledge, compassion and competence.
  • We believe that the clinical practice of nursing is built on a scientific base evaluation of nursing practice is a professional responsibility critical thinking and scientific inquiry are essential to the improvement of practice.
  • We believe that we have the responsibility to educate ourselves and educate others expand our knowledge and expertise share this growing body of knowledge provide such opportunities to the greater healthcare community.

Guided by these beliefs, RN orientation promotes safety, quality care and effective role performance reflective of the mission, vision and values of Massachusetts General Hospital and Patient Care Services. Orientation is the process in which each RN is introduced to regulatory requirements, the professional practice environment and safety and quality initiatives for patient and family centered care. The RN follows a carefully charted pathway whereby he/she is provided with an opportunity to acquire the elements of practice knowledge. It is a guided journey through the domains of sensory motor skills development, cognitive attainment and affective growth resulting in acquisition of MGH practice standards.
