Mission and Goals

NURSING RESEARCH AT MGH

Nursing research is an essential component of the Professional Practice Model at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).  Through the utilization of existing research and the development, testing, evaluation, and refinement of new knowledge, patient care is advanced.  Opportunities for nursing research exist across settings and within all dimensions of professional nursing.  The Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research provides an infrastructure to mobilize resources and support nursing research initiatives which advance clinical practice, foster a spirit of inquiry throughout MGH and the professional nursing community, and optimize quality patient care outcomes.

Impact

  • creating a clinical practice environment based upon inquiry
  • changing practice based on upon knowledge gained through research
  • advancing research initiatives through local, regional, and national funding
  • disseminating knowledge through presentations and publications

Overall Program Goals

  • Continue to refine the structure and generate the resources needed to advance nursing research at MGH.
  • Foster an organizational climate of inquiry at MGH that integrates and advances a nursing research agenda.
  • Expand a professional practice model to include evidence-based clinical practice informed by nursing research.
  • Generate research opportunities for all nurses at MGH.
  • Promote knowledge-based practice through the MGH nursing community.
  • Disseminate nursing research findings at national and international meetings and in relevant publications.
  • Expand partnerships between the Munn Center and multiple groups to complement and enhance the contributions of nursing research and improve quality, safe, and cost-effective patient-centered care.

Knowledge Development

The development of research to advance nursing knowledge impacts care outcomes and enhances the professional practice environment for providers of care. Currently, this work is occurring in several areas including workforce evaluation, evidence-based practice and Instrument development.  Dissemination of research advances in areas of nursing research concentration is facilitated through the Nursing Research Expo, presentations, and publications.
