About the Institute for Patient Care

The evolving programs of nursing research and interdisciplinary investigation in the Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research currently focus on:

  • workforce evaluation (Staff Perception of the Professional Practice Environment),
  • symptom management (reduction of hospital acquired pressure ulcers, falls prevention, effective pain management),
  • palliative care and care of the older adult (AgeWISE),
  • evidence-driven practice,
  • ethics and clinical decision-making,
  • transitional care,
  • healing and complementary therapies.

In addition, nurses are involved in advancing nursing conceptualizations that link philosophical and disciplinary knowledge with patient/family-centered care and cost-effective, high-quality, safe patient outcomes.

The Clinical Nurse Specialist Research Task Force addresses issues that impact practice and quality care, and initiatives that promote interdisciplinary collaboration such as the Clinical Innovations Awards.

The appointment of faculty as External Nurse Scientists to the Munn Center has been an effective strategy that enhances clinical and academic partnerships, promotes mentoring, and advances nursing’s research agenda.  MGH nurse scientists have been awarded Federal funding, as well as support from foundations and specialty organizations.  Internal resources within Patient Care Services have provided added funds to develop and promote staff nurse research potential.
