About Patient Care Services
Intravenous Therapy

The IV Therapy Team provides expert, compassionate and innovative intravenous care to older adults, adults, children and newborns. IV care includes the latest innovative technology for placement and maintenance of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC) and peripheral IV insertion (PIV). The team provides consultation and training to the healthcare team as vascular access and infusion specialists. Patient and family education is a major function of the IV team. The IV Team is also utilized as a resource for phlebotomy for patients with limited venous access.

Nursing Director
Bessie Manley, RN

To excel as an exemplary team in offering: patient and family-centered, quality and innovative intravascular therapy that promotes best practice and optimizes safe patient outcomes. The team also actively explores innovative new ways to provide care.

The patient care delivery model is a patient and family -focused model. The IV nurse typically covers six to seven in-patient nursing units. Patient-focused care is high quality, comprehensive, accessible, supportive and personalized. IV Team provides a unique nurse-driven initiative to provide patients with access to outpatient Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter placement and removal.

The IV Team members are registered nurses and specially trained IV technicians. The IV team also hosts student nurses interested in the Infusion Nursing specialty. The majority of the RN team members have specialty certification in Infusion Nursing, Oncology and/or Vascular Access.

Staff schedules are driven by patient need. The scheduling process is staff driven and flexible to accommodate work/life balance along with educational needs. Once the schedule is posted, the staff manages changes. IV Therapy Department provides coverage to all in-patient areas 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

All staff attends a one week hospital orientation program. IV Team orientation is preceptor based, individualized and determined by the nursing director, preceptor, and the new employee. The length of orientation is also individually determined.

Staff education and development is supported by the Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical and Professional Development. All IV staff members are encouraged to participate in educational offerings from the Infusion Nursing Society and the Association for Vascular Access.
