Patients are primarily thoracic surgical patients requiring post-operative care and airway management after tracheal esophageal, pulmonary, or laryngeal surgery. The Transplant Unit is a 21-bed special care unit located on Blake 6. These beds are designated for acutely ill, solid organ transplant patients. The patient population is comprised of pre and post renal, pancreas, liver, cardiac and lung transplant recipients. Additionally, patients may be admitted to the Transplant unit for treatment of acute allograft rejection, opportunistic infections and soft tissue infections. Long term allograft recipients who require other surgical procedures may also be admitted to Blake 6. The patient population ranges in age from 15 to 70 + years. Bigelow 14 is the center for vascular surgical nursing, including a twenty-seven bed adult inpatient unit and the unit-based MGH Vascular Home Care Program. Patients on this service usually undergo vascular surgery or interventional radiology procedures to improve arterial blood flow. At the time of discharge, patients who live within a 20-mile radius of Boston may receive home nursing services, if needed, from our vascular nurses who have been cross-trained to provide home care through a partnership program with the corporate home health agency, Partners Home Care.
