Collaborative Governance is the decision-making process that places the authority, responsibility and accountability for patient care with practicing clinicians. Collaborative Governance is based on the beliefs that a shared vision and common goals lead to a highly committed and productive workforce, that participation is empowering and that people will make appropriate decisions when sufficient knowledge is known and communicated (Patient care Services Operating Plan, 2002). Since launching Collaborative Governance in 1997, much has changed in health care, technology and the evolving needs of our patients and families. In 2010, a redesign effort was initiated to better align the work of Collaborative Governance with the strategic goals of Patient Care Services and the hospital, regulatory readiness and Magnet re-designation efforts. To reflect the scope of Collaborative Governance, Excellence Every Day and Magnet champions are now integrated into the new committee structure. Now all Collaborate Governance members are identified as champions and share the same organizational charge — to influence, communicate and educate. Diversity Steering Committee
The Collaborative Governance Diversity Steering Committee is committed to supporting and developing strategies which transform our work setting into a more inclusive and welcoming environment for staff, patients, and families alike. The committee’s work includes professional development, student outreach, programs centered on culturally competent care and input into the development of patient education material specifically designed for use by clinicians who care for a diverse patient population. Ethics in Clinical Practice Committee
The Collaborative Governance Ethics in Clinical Practice (EICP) Committee is a multidisciplinary committee, which was formed to develop and implement activities and programs to further clinicians’ understanding of ethical aspects of patient care. The work of this committee involves identifying strategies to integrate ethical judgment into professional practice and consultation at unit and organizational levels related to ethical issues in patient care.. Practice and Quality Oversight Committee
The Collaborative Governance Practice and Quality Oversight Committee provides oversight of the work of the five sub-comittees - Fall Prevention; Pain Management; Policy, Procedure and Products; Restraint Usage; and Skin Care - to ensure that each committee is not only meeting their goals and outcomes but working together to create an environment where patients receive safe, evidence based high quality care delivered by competent clinicians. Fall Prevention sub-Committee
The Collaborative Governance Fall Prevention sub-Committee works to provide a safe environment for all patients and to develop an individualized plan of care for those who are at risk for falls. Champions accomplish this by empowering staff with evidence-based knowledge to assess risk and implement fall prevention care plans for patients, and to provide all staff with clear and concise guidelines for fall prevention, intervention and post-fall care. Champions should be interested in creating a safe environment for all patients by recognizing warning signs of a patient at risk for falls (physical, psycho-social), how to prevent falls, involve patients and families in these efforts and share this knowledge with colleagues. Pain Management sub-Committee
The Collaborative Governance Pain Management sub-Committee works to ensure that clinicians have the knowledge/skills needed to assess and treat all patients' pain. Members serve as a resource to their colleagues while striving to improve patient satisfaction related to pain control. They also collaborate with leadership, finding ways to continuously improve practice and related resources. Policy, Procedure and Products sub-Committee
The Collaborative Governance Policy, Procedure and Products sub-Committee reviews and approves policies and procedures to ensure they are appropriately vetted and evidence-based. Champions review and approve products that are brought into the practice environment, including the plan for product roll-out. Champions should have an interest in influencing how the policies and procedures that guide practice are reviewed and implemented. They should also have an interest in being involved in the decisions to purchase and trial products in the clinical area. Restraint Usage sub-Committee
The Collaborative Governance Restraint Usage sub-Committee will be engaged in identifying evidence-based interventions that can reduce the use of restraints. Champions will gain knowledge in identifying and intervening effectively to minimize a patient’s likelihood of being restrained. Champions should have an interest in minimizing the use of restraints through early identification of patients at risk, collaboration with the patient’s family, and the use of alternative therapies and interventions. Skin Care sub-Committee
The Collaborative Governance Skin Care sub-Committee will work to ensure that clinicians have the knowledge, resources and skill to maintain skin integrity and prevent and treat hospital acquired pressure ulcers. They will collaborate to develop and update guidelines and resources that reflect the state of the science, to ensure prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers and other wounds; serve as a resource/consultant to colleagues to ensure that all members of the team ahve the knowledge necessary to effectively eliminate skin breakdown; and collaborate with unit/department leadership on tracking, analyzing and problem solving occurences of skin breakdown. Research and Evidence-based Committee
The Collaborative Governance Research and Evidence-based Practice Committee (REBP) exists to foster the spirit of inquiry around clinical practice. The committee supports nurses in the research utilization process and communicates the results of nursing research activities. We believe that passion and purpose fueled by energizing forces builds great achievements. Patient Education Committee
The Collaborative Governance Patient Education Committee is a multidisciplinary committee whose goal is to support clinical staff in developing their role in patient education activities that reflects the diverse patient population served. The committee supports these activities through stimulating, facilitating and generating knowledge of Patient Education materials, programs and systems that will improve patient care and enhance the environment in which clinicians shape their practice. Informatics
The Collaborative Governance Informatics Committee is a multi-disciplinary committee responsible for informatics education, identification of informatics issues, and the development of solutions for those issues so that Patient Care Services staff will better be able to support the mission of the Massachusetts General Hospital. Members of the committee will act as resources for initiatives relating to informatics.
Staff Nurse Advisory Committee
The Patient Care Services Staff Nurse Advisory Committee provides a forum for communication between nursing leadership and clinical nurses at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Committee members representing all patient care units engage in dialogue with nursing leaders about matters of patient care and professional development.
