ARMS Young Adult Group Program - Skills and Support
(Addiction Recovery Management Services)

A 8 week, rolling admission group designed to help patients identify their goals regarding substance use, learn new skills to identify and manage substance use related behaviors, build motivation for change, and develop and work towards other life goals.

Program Description: The Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA) to alcohol and substance use treatment is a behavioral intervention that seeks to increase the family, social, and educational/vocational motivators to support recovery. A-CRA targets youth 12 to 22+ years old with DSM-IV cannabis, alcohol, and/or other substance use disorders. According to the adolescent's needs and self-assessment of happiness in multiple areas of functioning, group leaders will review several A-CRA procedures that address, for example, problem-solving skills to cope with day-to-day stressors, communication skills, substance use refusal skills, and active participation in positive social and recreational activities with the goal of improving life satisfaction.

Structure of Group: The A-CRA group will meet for 75 minutes.  We will spend the first 15 minutes of the group doing check-in, reviewing goals for the week, and setting the agenda for the group. We will spend the next 45 minutes learning a set of skills and reviewing work for at home practice.  We will spend the last 15 minutes of the group setting goals for the week, reviewing any high-risk situations, and discussing potential skills to practice.

Group Inclusion Criteria:

  • Either an ARMS or West End substance use initial assessment
  • Desire to gain understanding about substance use and willingness to develop and work towards goals aimed at improving life satisfaction

Group Exclusion Criteria:
