About Patient Care Services

MassHealth is Massachusetts' Medicaid health insurance program for certain people with low income.

Two of the MassHealth plan types, MassHealth Standard and MassHealth CommonHealth, cover non-emergency medical transportation when no alternative transportation (including family/friends) is available or appropriate, AND when prescribed by a physician or certain other health practitioners.

  • You must have MassHealth Standard or CommonHealth health insurance to be eligible for MassHealth transportation benefits. Other types of MassHealth coverage do not cover transportation (except in an emergency).
  • If you are unsure as to what type of MassHealth coverage you have, contact MassHealth directly at 1-800-841-2900 or Mass General Patient Financial Services at 617-726-2191.
  • MassHealth transportation is by prescription only and should only be used if family, friends and public transportation (including the RIDE) are unavailable or are not medically appropriate.

To Apply

  • Ask the doctor you will be seeing at Mass General to submit a prescription for transportation, also called a PT-1 form.
    • If your doctor doesn’t have a PT-1 form, or for more information, call the MassHealth Customer Service Line at 800-841-2900 or on the web, go to then select “MassHealth Provider Forms”.

Using MassHealth Transportation

  • Once approved, MassHealth will send you a letter explaining how to arrange rides. The transportation company will be informed that you are approved. That company may then use yet another transportation company to drive you.
    • You must call before 1:00 pm at least three (3) business days in advance to set up your ride. Your transportation provider will not book your ride without sufficient notice.
    • If you have repeating appointments, you can set up a “standing order,” which will have your transportation company pick you up at the same time each day/week (e.g., every Tuesday at 2pm).
