Endowed Nursing Research Fund

Grant Application

 

  1. Grant Amount:  $5,000
  2. Number of Awards:  Minimum of one grant award annually
  3. Award Overview: The Dorothy A. Jones Endowed Nursing Research Fund (sponsored by Frances and Stephen Foster) is a grant award designed to support nurse researchers (Ph.D. prepared) who are advancing a program of research exploring the nurse-patient relationship, a holistic approach to nursing assessment and clinical reasoning to uncover the patient and/or family's response to illness and life pattern that guides actions to promote health and well-becoming.
  4. Grant Eligibility:
    • Nurse employed at least 36 hours per week in nursing at MGH.
    • Demonstrated passion for research that improves patient and family outcomes beyond the illness experience. 
    • Has an established research trajectory in nursing and patient care delivery.
    • Prepared to conduct research with a clearly defined framework to guide the inquiry.
    • Possesses the requisite methodological expertise.
    • Has a record of publications and presentations.
    • The proposed study focuses on original research with the potential for external funding and translation of findings to inform practice.
  5. Research Priorities (examples):
    • Use of the Functional Pattern Health Assessment Framework to guide clinical inquiry in the patient population under study.
    • Evaluation, testing, and refinement of the Functional Health Pattern Assessment Framework in practice across diverse populations.
    • Comparative evaluation of the patient health experience using methodologies which uncover the patient/family/community experience of health and well-becoming.
    • Examining the contributions of nursing to patient and family outcomes and other parameters related to variables such as cost, safety, quality, LOS.
    • Evaluating the efficacy of current and novel communication strategies to describe patient experiences and responses, and impact of nursing knowledge in promoting health and well-becoming.

  7. All applicants must work with the Munn Center Grant Manager (email below) for budget approval BEFORE you submit your application. The grant manager will sign the budget as an indicator of approval. This is required with any application. Budget requests must be detailed and itemized. Note that the grant manager has limited availability – please contact him EARLY!

  2. All applications will be reviewed by members of The Dorothy A. Jones Endowed Nursing Research Grant Advisory Committee.

  1. Duration of the Grant and Post Funding Information:
    • The grant is to be completed within two years from the start of funding.  An option for a no-cost extension is available on a case-by-case basis. 
    • Grant recipients will participate in a post-award meeting. Materials about available resources, IRB review, and progress reporting will be shared.
    • Grant recipients will be expected to disseminate research findings at poster and podium presentations and in peer-reviewed journals and pursue future funding opportunities if relevant.  
    • All dissemination resulting from this grant (publications, poster/ podium presentations) should contain the following statement: “Research support for this investigation was provided by the Dorothy A. Jones Endowed Research Fund and the Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research, Massachusetts General Hospital.”
